BNFL - Scanning for Safety

As part of a major safety review at one of the BNFL sites, the safety assessment team would have to review upward of 1 million pages of documentation. This had all been microfilmed during the original commissioning stages, but only had minimal paper based indexes. To improve efficiency and effectiveness of the review it was decided to convert the microfilms to digital media and keyword index each document.

Motive Technology were awarded the contract to digitally scan and index over 1 million microfilm images. The task was by no means straight forward, as the microfilms were of differing formats and some of very poor quality. The team at Motive were very experienced and proactive at overcoming many quality and integrity issues, but worked significantly beyond normal conditions to deliver the indexed digital images to time and cost.
