EDI Solutions - Business Needs

The database system deployed across an organisation is an integrated suite that has to satisfy an incredibly diverse spectrum of requirements from strategic planning issues (e.g. penetration of product sales by regional income distribution) to daily operation tasks (e.g. product returns).

The organisation needs to carry out a structured analysis of it's data needs based on the following 3 simple questions;

1. What business decisions do I need to make?
2. What information do I need to make that decision?
3. What data must I collect to generate the information?

When complete the results can be optimised to provide the required cost/benefit for implementation. The task is not a simple one and requires commitment from all management layers, but if carried out correctly can yield significant gains. The diagram below shows how existing systems must be integrated to provide the coherent information across the organisation.
